Story

The original, since 1992.

Gartenstadt — known as Đức Bảo — opened in 1992 as Saigon's oldest German restaurant: 4.3 stars from 1,189 Google reviews, and about 70% of its crowd is local.

The date

Since 1992

The signage says it plainly: 'THE ORIGINAL GERMAN RESTAURANT SINCE 1992' — more than three decades of schnitzel, pork knuckle and German beer on Đồng Khởi.

The hall

Teakwood and brass

A long Bavarian bar of teakwood, blue booths, a display cabinet of beer steins and a chalkboard of specials. The sign says it all: 'ẨM THỰC ĐỨC THUẦN TÚY'.

The taps

Imported beer on tap

Imported Krombacher and Schneider Weisse poured from the tap; Erdinger Weissbier in the tall glasses. The 'BIA ĐỨC / GERMAN BEER' sign does not exaggerate.

The regulars

~70% local

The room runs on local regulars — about 70% of the crowd is from around here. A German restaurant in Saigon, with a very local soul.
