The story

The upstairs quán of the xóm

Xóm Chợ Cũ is a central-Vietnamese mì quảng quán on the first floor (lầu 1) of the old 35 Ly Tu Trong apartment block, District 1. Here, mì quảng is the quán's “linh hồn” — its soul: fresh noodles made every day, herbs and greens brought in from the Quảng homeland, a Quảng-native chef at the stove — and the old-neighborhood rhythm of an old Saigon apartment block, where guests climb the stairs to the first floor for a bowl that tastes of home.

“Up the stairs, a bowl of mì quảng, the sound of the xóm — that is the quán's flavor.”
