Okay so. It's 2:47 AM on a random weeknight and I am sitting in a café in District 10 drinking cà phê sữa đá while the breeze-block tiles glow amber and a phin drips slow on the counter. This place — Tiệm Cà Phê Phố Xưa, 702/1 Sư Vạn Hạnh — is open TWENTY-FOUR SEVEN. I repeat: 24/7. In a city where most cafés close at 10 PM sharp, this is basically a public service.
The whole room is old Saigon cosplay done RIGHT. Sepia newspaper walls. A wood-burned order sign that just tells you what to do: choose your drink, pay at the counter, sit down. No fuss, no QR-code-table-number app nonsense. The menu booklet cover is a vintage Saigon newspaper collage with a phin cup on it — bilingual, old-print typography, the works.
The pricing logic is the ritual: S / M / Phin — and the phin column costs MORE, because waiting is the point.
Let me talk about that, because it's genius. Three columns: S, M, Phin. The phin — the slow drip, the one that takes four minutes — costs more than the fast options. They're literally charging you for patience. "Cà Phê Nguyên Chất. Đậm Vị Truyền Thống." Pure coffee, bold traditional taste. The owner's own three lines, and they mean it. This is not third-wave light-roast citrus-notes coffee. This is the strong, dark, condensed-milk stuff that puts hair on your chest.
Good to know
Receipts, because I promised receipts: my cà phê sữa đá phin was cheaper than the iced latte I had in D1 yesterday, and twice as strong. At 3 AM. While the city slept. The 4.4 rating across 97 reviews undersells it — the people reviewing at 2 AM are not leaving detailed reviews, they're leaving because they have work in the morning.
Who needs this? Night-shift workers. Insomniacs. Anyone who's ever landed at Tân Sơn Nhất at 1 AM and thought "I need coffee NOW." Anyone nostalgic for the Saigon their parents talk about. Me, apparently, on a Tuesday.
Verdict: the rare 24-hour spot that isn't depressing. The amber breeze-blocks at 3 AM are genuinely beautiful. 9/10, would become nocturnal again.
