The Dining Hall That Remembers Seoul

There is a particular hush that belongs to old dining halls — not silence, exactly, but the low, warm register of a room where people have been eating well for a long time. Myung Ga has it. Tucked into the ground floor of MPlaza on Lê Duẩn, the former Kumho Asiana Plaza, it carries the building's history in its bones: a Korean landmark that watched the city's Korean quarter grow up around it, now serving the third generation of regulars.

This is not a tabletop DIY barbecue house, and the distinction matters. The kitchen grills — the meat arrives on a black cast-iron plate over a wooden trivet, still hissing, sesame-seed glaze caramelized at the edges. Brass banchan bowls ring a stone pot of stew at a full boil. One review I found put it plainly: "canh to lắm" — the soup is enormous — and the paper chopstick sleeve in the photo says MYUNG GA in plain roman letters, like a signature at the bottom of a letter.

Myung Ga
Some restaurants feed you. The old ones receive you.

Even the wet-wipe packet is a small archive: "KOREAN RESTAURANT / Myung Ga" in classic serif, the address and telephone printed beneath, a relic from when restaurants announced themselves on paper. I held it a moment longer than necessary. The past lives in these unconsidered objects — the colonial lobby, the faded sign, the wipe packet — and Myung Ga is full of them, not as decoration but as continuity.

Good to know

Ground floor, MPlaza (Kumho Asiana Plaza), 39 Lê Duẩn, Bến Nghé, Q1. Open 9:00–21:00 daily. Kitchen-grilled BBQ, not DIY — order the honey-glazed ribs and let them arrive hissing.

Lunch here feels like stepping into a gentler decade: dolsot bubbling, brass catching the light, nobody in a hurry. I thought of the Korean families who came to Saigon in the nineties and built places like this so they'd have somewhere to remember home — and of how, thirty years on, the remembering has become the home itself. Lush, unhurried, precise. Go for the long lunch.
