The door handles are made from portafilters. I noticed this before I noticed anything else about Barista Collective's Trần Văn Đang shop — <Quote>
you grab a portafilter to walk in, which is either a gimmick or a mission statement.
</Quote> Four floors later, I'd decided: mission statement.
This is a brick-and-greenery roastery in a four-storey industrial-rustic shophouse in District 3, and the brand's whole identity is the people behind the bar. Not a roastery brand with a café attached — a collective of baristas. Founder Trung Phạm's creed is that every month brings new drinks built on Vietnamese produce, and the menu is a calendar, not a list. Flat white and latte are what the reviewers name first; the single-origin pour-over is what the pilgrims come for. Prices run 25,000 to 65,000 đồng. Honest numbers.
The room: exposed brick, terracotta floors, hanging plants, caged pendants, a back garden where the jungle swallows the brickwork. Daylight filters through leaves; reviewers keep reaching for the same three Vietnamese words — relaxed, warm, quiet. Upstairs is air-conditioned seating with playful upholstery against the raw walls. There's a house cat. There's reliable Wi-Fi and a laptop crowd. It closes at 5pm, which tells you it's serious about the daytime.
I'll be direct about the trade-offs. Daytime-only hours mean no evening option. The roastery credentials are asserted more than documented — I couldn't verify in-house roasting claims, and I don't like asserting what I can't verify. The original Hồ Xuân Hương branch has the history; this one has the garden.
The monthly drinks program deserves scrutiny too, because "new every month" can mean inspired or it can mean restless. What I tasted — the current produce-driven special, built on Vietnamese fruit — was thoughtful, balanced, not a gimmick. The fruit was present but didn't bully the coffee. That's harder than it sounds. Most seasonal menus are either timid or chaotic; this one was composed. I'll grant them the calendar.
But the coffee I drank — a flat white, then a pour-over of something Ethiopian — was properly made. The latte art was the real signal: you can't fake that. The monthly produce drinks show a kitchen that's thinking, not coasting. And the portafilter door handles, which I mocked on the way in, made sense on the way out. This is a place built by people who love the craft enough to put it on the door. I respect that more than I respect most tasting menus.
Final assessment, since that's what I'm for: worth visiting, worth the prices, worth the trip to Trần Văn Đang. Come in the morning when the light comes through the greenery — that's when the room is at its best, and when the baristas are freshest. Order the flat white first to calibrate, then let them talk you into the monthly special. The garden is worth the stairs. The cat is worth the garden. <Quote>
And the door handles, which I will now defend, are worth the photograph everyone takes.
