There are restaurants you visit, and there are restaurants you settle into. Anrakutei is the second kind. Sixty years — since 1963 — of the same secret marinade, the same ritual: the grill set in the middle of the table, and everything else arranged around the fire. "Peaceful Residence" — 安楽亭 — and the name is not aspirational. It's descriptive.
I came on a Sunday evening, when the Mạc Đĩnh Chi storefront is at its most theatrical: the glowing white 安楽亭 board with red ANRAKUTEI letters and the "NHÀ HÀNG THỊT NƯỚNG AN LẠC ĐÌNH" band blazing over the sidewalk. You see it from half a block away and your evening rearranges itself around it. Inside, the box seats are spacious — real Japanese-style spacing, none of the elbow-to-elbow economy seating — and the service moves at the unhurried pace of people who have done this ten thousand times.
1 / 3The grill sits in the middle of the table, and for sixty years, everything in this restaurant has been arranged around the fire.
The menu speaks yakiniku's precision register, which is a different language from Korean BBQ's buffet sprawl. Karubi, tontoro, gyutan — each cut plated with its own little Japanese cut-label card, like specimens. The tare is the house signature, refined since 1963: no additives, the menu says, "An toàn · An tâm" — safe, at ease. You taste the decades in it. It's darker, deeper, less sweet than the sauces at the newer Korean grills. It tastes like someone stopped experimenting in 1985 and was right to stop.
I watched the table next to me — a family, three generations, the grandmother trimming fat off a slice of karubi with the focus of a surgeon — and thought about what it means for a restaurant to outlive its first customers' grandchildren. The sukiyaki and okonomiyaki on the extended menu are there for the regulars who want a night off from the grill. Everything else is the ritual: meat, fire, tare, repeat.
Good to know
Đà Lạt taught me to love the 6 AM regulars, the shops that pour the same cup for thirty years. Anrakutei is that instinct, doubled and set over charcoal. Not new. Not chasing anything. Just the fire in the middle of the table, sixty years on.
