The Rooftop on a Train Factory (Yes, Really)

Trên Tầng Thượng. "On the Rooftop." Same address as its sibling — 540/19 Cách Mạng Tháng Tám — but a completely different animal. Where On the Upper Floor is a garden, this is an industrial fever dream: a 1,000–1,500m² rooftop on top of a century-old French-built train-repair factory, overlooking the rail yard and Saigon station.
You don't just walk in. You find the guard post, announce yourself, and climb an old spiral staircase — iron and wood, genuinely creaky — from the factory floor to the roof. The arrival ritual is half the experience. By the time you emerge into the white-gravel courtyard, you've earned it.
And what a courtyard: two lotus ponds with lily pads catching the string lights. Wooden pavilions with mossy old tiled roofs. Pampas grass swaying. A glasshouse at the edge that reviewers keep calling "Đà Lạt on a rooftop" — and they're right, it's the photo corner, it's stunning, go at golden hour.
Now the drinking. This place runs two shifts: day café (coffee, brunch, bakes — the smell of fresh baking drifts up from below) and night bar (BBQ + cocktails). The night is the main event: live acoustic music every single night, 19:30 to 21:30, no surcharge. Singers performing on the wooden deck among the crowd, not on some distant stage. BBQ grills going. Cocktails flowing. Keep your BBQ receipt and get 20% off coffee — a small detail I love.
The honest stuff: it's an open rooftop on a factory. Midday is brutal — reviews warn about the heat, and they're right. Go early morning or late afternoon; the magic hours are sunrise and sunset. There's no elevator; it's the spiral staircase or nothing. Parking is below at the factory.
But at night? Sitting by a lotus pond, string lights overhead, acoustic guitar drifting across the deck, a cocktail in hand, trains somewhere below in the dark — there's nothing else like it in Saigon.
The 1am conversation here isn't in a bar. It's on a factory roof, under the sky, next to a pond full of lilies. That's the kind of drinking I write about.
Come for sunset. Stay for the music.
