Fifty-seven review mentions. That's how many times people have written about the melted tiramisu at Make Room — 68,000 đồng of it, the dish the internet knows this place for. I ordered it within four minutes of sitting down, because <Quote>

when 57 strangers agree on something, you don't argue. You order.

But first, the room. An old apartment on Calmette in Bến Thành, tiled facade outside, dark green doors, a little red lowercase sign. Inside it's narrow and deep — green-topped tables, rattan chairs, paper lanterns overhead — and then you look up and there's a mezzanine, a loft with railings and beams that doubles the space. Upstairs nooks, downstairs hum. The whole place glows honey-yellow at night; the cube sign's red ribbon-R marks it from the street like a beacon.

The vinyl console is the soul of the place. A collector's corner — red star lamp, pyramid lamp, records — lamplight pooling on it like it's the most important furniture in the room, which it might be. The crowd is young and busy, laptops everywhere, but it never feels loud. It's a work-friendly café that somehow stays warm, which is a trick most work cafés fail.

And the tiramisu. It arrived melted — that's the style, that's the point — and it was as good as the 57 reviews promised. Rich, soft, gone in minutes. I followed it with a matcha latte (70K, layered, beautiful on the green tabletop) and an egg coffee (60K), because the menu board's prices were all right there and nothing felt like a risk.

Here's what I didn't expect: the mezzanine. I climbed the stairs with my matcha and found the upstairs nooks — quieter, warmer, the beams low overhead, the hum of the ground floor rising like something pleasant. It's a different café up there. Downstairs is social; upstairs is contemplative. Most small shops can't offer two moods. Make Room does it with a staircase.

The pastry case deserves its own mention, because I almost missed it: Pain Suisse at 40K, sticky buns at 70K, sitting in the case at the back counter like they own the place. I took a sticky bun to go and ate it on the walk back, and I'm telling you now so you don't make my mistake of almost skipping it. <Quote>

Say yes to the pastry case. Say yes to the mezzanine. Say yes to the second drink.

I said yes to everything here — the mezzanine, the vinyl corner, the tiramisu, the second drink — and nothing disappointed me. The name is the invitation and the review: make room. For the dessert, for the afternoon, for the unexpected upstairs. I made room. You should too.

Good to know

Practical notes, because saying yes works better with information: it's at 41/4 Calmette in Bến Thành, open 8am to 10pm daily, and it gets busy — this is not a secret. Go on a weekday morning for the quiet version, or embrace the weekend hum; the room handles both. The tiramisu is 68K and non-negotiable — order it first, thank me later. The vinyl console is real and the lamps are worth a photograph. And if the mezzanine is free, take it. Upstairs, with the beams and the warm light and the whole room glowing below, is the best seat in the house. I said yes to it. Say yes.
