Light is the first thing I paint, so it's the first thing I notice. At Lò Gạch Cafe, the light comes through brick.
The whole four-storey house at 95 Trần Thiện Chánh is built of it — gạch bông gió, ventilation brick — and in the late afternoon the walls glow. Not bright. Glowing, the way paper glows when you hold it to a lamp. The pattern of the brick throws geometry across the floor: diamonds and hexagons of light that move while you watch. I sat on the second floor for an hour just watching the shapes travel. July light, around four o'clock — that amber hour when Saigon softens.
1 / 3The name means "brick kiln," and the brand is honest about it: solid wooden menu boards engraved with the kiln-cube mark, "Lò Gạch CAFE / Hi-end Music" in classic serif, carried to your table. Prices engraved in the wood — cà phê đen 30.000, cà phê lắc 30.000, trà sữa 25.000, mì chiên 35.000. Honest wood, honest prices. A draped fabric ceiling softens the top floor; the rooftop garden opens to the sky.
It's dim inside, and deliberately so. Old Saigon love songs play on a proper hi-end system — not background music, music, the kind people came here for since 2012. Office workers nap through lunch in the corners. Nobody minds. The quiet here isn't empty; it's full, like the pause between brushstrokes.
Some cafés are lit. This one is luminous — the building itself is the lamp.
Go on a weekday afternoon if you want the light show; the brick does its best work between three and five, west side. Evenings belong to the music and the rooftop. The love songs, the glowing walls, the garden above — it's a painting you can sit inside.
Good to know
I left with brick-dust on my shoes and the geometry of the light still in my eyes. Some places you photograph. This one you remember in color.
