I went to A Priori Coffee House because the name annoyed me. A Latin name — a priori, "from what comes before" — on a hanging wooden sign in a Hòa Hưng alley? It felt like a dare. So naturally I read all 306 Google reviews first (4.3 stars, and yes, I counted the complaints: slow service during peak hours, noted).
What I found: a mustard-yellow Hội An-style house with green wooden shutters, patterned encaustic tiles underfoot in cream and terracotta, and vintage wood furniture that looks like it was collected over decades rather than ordered from a catalog. The varnished hanging sign swings over the alley gate — "Coffee House A PRIORI" with two crossed coffee spoons and "EST. 2016" beneath. It's been here since 2016, which in Saigon café years makes it practically a heritage site.
1 / 3The egg coffee is the move. It's Hanoi-style — thick, properly custardy, the kind where you stir it yourself and watch the color change — and it costs what an egg coffee should cost, not what District 1 thinks it should. I compared: the bistro menu of Vietnamese regional dishes is the surprise second act. Most alley cafés stop at drinks; this one will feed you a real lunch.
The rooftop terrace is where the 4.3 stars come from, I think. Terracotta tiles, string lights, and a garden that glows after dark until 10 PM.
Practical notes, since that's my job: the reel-to-reel tape and tube amplifier in the hall are real, not props — there's an actual audiophile thing happening here. Old Saigon love songs, warm sound. The nooks are better than the main hall if you want to read; the main hall is better if you want to eavesdrop.
Good to know
Was the Latin name pretentious? A little. Was the egg coffee worth the trip down the alley? Completely. Some names you grow into; this one has had ten years. Verdict: a keeper for slow afternoons, and the rare alley spot that feeds you properly. Bring someone who reads signs.
