The story

Why is it called Lao Tru?

Zhu Bajie — the hungriest of the pilgrims in Journey to the West. Naming the house after him is a promise: here, eating and drinking is the most serious business.

So the house hangs a neon “In Tru we trust” on the brick arches, paints a glowing pink pig in the courtyard, and names dishes after a whole story universe: Flaming Demon King, Kungfu Somersault, “best-under-heaven” pork jowl.

And stepping in is stepping into a party — around 250 seats, long communal tables, a football projector, an MC, karaoke. Eating politely here would waste the name.

“Lao Tru is for street-food lovers — forget the way home.”

The menu tells stories

Dish names as playful as Journey to the West

Behind the playful names is real Texas-style smoked BBQ: Texas beef ribs marinated for hours in a secret sauce, crackling pork belly, half-kilo T-bone. Plus 25+ craft-beer lines — Zhu Bajie without a drink wouldn’t be Zhu Bajie.

Flaming Demon King

Served still flaming — the demon king descends on a hot stone plate.

Kungfu Somersault

A tumbling hotpot tray: shrimp, mussels, rolled pork belly — one somersault and it arrives.

“Best-under-heaven” crispy jowl

Self-crowned best under heaven — taste it before you argue.

Lao Tru spicy sausage

Plump, snappy, a little spicy — even better with an ice-cold beer.

The dish names are the house’s joke — but the kitchen is serious. “25+ craft-beer lines” is the house’s own claim; individual tap names are unverified, so they aren’t listed here.
